A 3-way bet is a type of bet with three potential outcomes. These outcomes are usually team A win, draw or team B win. A 3-way bet is also commonly referred to as a 1×2 bet (team 1, draw (x), team 2), but I will refer to it as 3-way betting for the rest of this article, which is the more common term here in Canada.
A 3 way handicap is an excellent bet which evens out teams and increases odds. In this wager, the bookmaker gives one of the competitors a goal/point advantage before the match starts and gives you three betting options, which are home team wins, away team wins, and draw.
3-way betting is especially popular for games that have the potential to end in draws, such as soccer matches. You will also see 3-way lines available for hockey games as a regulation time bet, and many other sports where draws are possible such as football, boxing, golf head-to-head, etc.
Here is an example of a 3-way betting line from Bet365.com for a match between Chelsea and Manchester City.
At Bet365 this bet was listed as “Full Time Result”. In addition to 3-way, 1×2 and full time result, you may also see 3-way bets referred to as “regulation time bet”.
In the above example, there are three possible outcomes in the match and odds associated with each outcome: Chelsea winning, Draw or Manchester City winning.
A 3-way bet is the exact same as a typical money line bet in terms of the odds and associated payout. The only difference is that there are three potential outcomes instead of two.
This wouldn’t be much of a how to guide for Canadians if we didn’t include a hockey example of a 3-way bet.
I will often bet the 3-way line in hockey rather than the money line in order to get a larger payout when I’m confident in a team winning in regulation.
Here’s an example from the battle of Alberta:
As you can see the bet is labeled as “regulation time” at Sports Interaction. This means that the bet does not include overtime, which allows it to have three possible outcomes: Calgary winning, a tie or Edmonton winning.
In this example, Edmonton is the favourite to win the game, and they are still under a 2/1 favourite to win in overtime. To give you an idea of the difference in return you can win by betting the regulation line instead of the money line, in this example Edmonton’s odds to win the game straight up (including overtime) are 1.56. So if you like Edmonton, including a win in overtime will get you a $56 win on a $100 bet, while wagering on them to get the job done in regulation would win you $91 on a $100 bet. As you can see if you like a team to win the game before the coin flip that is OT and a shootout, then the regulation line can provide value.

To play Daily 3, players choose three numbers from 0 to 9 (the same number can be selected more than once) and can choose whether to play in the next Midday or Evening drawing. After this, there are various bet types to choose from, which offer prizes when certain combinations of your chosen numbers match the winning Daily 3 numbers. The bet types are as follows:
Straight bets win when the numbers chosen by the player match the numbers drawn in the Daily 3 Lottery in the exact order. For example, if you play the numbers 432, you only win if the numbers 4, 3, and 2 are drawn in that order.
With a Box wager, your chosen numbers must match those drawn in any order. Your wager is considered a 3-Way or 6-Way Box depending on how many possible combinations of your chosen numbers there are. For example, there are only three possible combinations of the numbers 112 (112, 211, and 121), so this would be considered a 3-Way Box. The prizes awarded for 3-Way Box bets are greater than those of 6-Way Box bets, as the odds of matching the correct numbers are higher.
For wheel bets, you place a $0.50 or $1.00 stake on every combination of your three chosen numbers. A Wheel bet is considered a 3-Way or 6-Way bet depending on how many combinations of your chosen numbers are possible. For example, a Wheel bet on the numbers 112 would be considered a 3-Way Wheel, as there are only three possible combinations of those numbers (112, 211, and 121). If you placed this as a $1.00 Wheel bet, it would cost $3.00 in total, as you're betting $1.00 on each of the three different number combinations. A $1.00 6-Way Wheel would cost $6.00.
With 2-Way bets, you place both a Straight bet and a Box bet on your chosen numbers. You can only place a $1.00 stake on this type of bet, as it is split in half, with $0.50 going on the Straight bet and the other $0.50 going on the Box bet. The same Straight and Box bet rules as above apply in a 2-Way bet.
You win a 1-Off bet if your chosen numbers match those drawn in the exact order (the same as a Straight bet), or if one of your numbers is one up or one down from the numbers drawn. For example, if you chose the numbers 345, you would win a 1-Off Straight bet if the numbers drawn were 3, 4, and 5, in that order. You would win the 1-Off Up and Down bet if any of the numbers 245, 445, 335, 355, 344, or 346 are drawn, giving you six additional winning combinations.
